Unit Build

The Polar Bear is part of the releases being made by Wave of A.F.S. type suits. It is effectively the same as the A.F.S. but has a small number of different parts (gun tip and back pack sides are the most obvious) to customise it for this particular setting.

This particular suit was built for a Polar Bear Group Build on SFM:uk

2nd February 2008

My original concept was for a digital camo pattern based on my ski jacket. But I realised when I came to apply the decals I had made that this was not going to work and decided late in the build to revert to my original plan

I decided right from the start that this was going to be a split suit build. So this was the main part which took the majority of the work for me. The design of the model allows for this pretty easily with just a small piece cut from the front, and the main front piece then coming forwards.

Also going to go with a two handed suit. A had a bottom arm part knocking around from an old AFS suit I canibalised for something else. It's not 100% the same but you would need to look quite closely to spot the differences. This does mean I will need an extra hand from somewhere. Fortunately on one of my shopping excursions on Rainbow Ten, ages ago, I bougt a set of Wave hands. They are not quite the same but a close match.

Lastly in this update are a couple of family shots with it's brother, the Luna Pawn.

I realised that the firewall between the engine and the pilot areas was too far back. If you look where the exhaust vents it's inside the pilot's part. So I have moved that forwards a little bit. But doing so I mucked up a few bits and have to do some repairs.

16th February 2008

I have come up with something for an engine. I think it still needs a little work but it will be the basis of the stuff at the back:

And the inside of the front bit has got a couple of vents added:

I will be adding padding around this but I am still waiting for some Magic Scuplt to arrive to use for the padded parts.

I figured that the suit should have plenty of hot air vents to keep the pilot warm. In the back section I am going to add heating coils like you might get on an electric fire. This will be on the non-hinging part (the bit that doesn't have the engine in it).

24th February 2006

Got my Magic Scuplt in the post on Friday and this stuff is just amazing. It mixes up really easily, doesn't leave gunk all over your hands like Milliput does, can be shaped and smoothed just so easily. All the bits shown below are using Magic Sculpt and the time it took was just so little. Amazing stuff!!! Milliput was straight in the bin.

New additions are the smoke dischargers (which are brass tube and will be capped off with some Wave parts) and the power pipes to the leg have been winter hardened. That is they have been lagged. Although not very obvious.

Some more picts below. The joint covers got a layer of Magic Sculpt added over the top of them which I think improves the look a lot.

The area around the arm holes got a layer as well to try and simulate some padding around them. Hid the bottom with something that is meant to be leg holes, although the pilot must have the shortest torso ever!

This is the inside of the front section:
